Do Not Disturb February 23, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jenelle Thompson @ 1:57 pm

When I woke up, I had a very encouraging text message waiting for me from my little sister. She told me that she was listening to the radio and a song came on and she just broke down and starting allowing God to pour into her. With each tear that felt, words were spoken to her. At the end of the text message, she encouraged us to spend time quality time with God and allow Him to pour into us. I thanked her for that message because I had been slacking in my quality time. I was about to go further and give excuses as to why I hadn’t been spending that much needed time with Him but He wouldn’t let me type that. Instead He spoke something else to me.

Have you ever been the person to tell friends or family not to disturb you during a certain time because your favorite television show is on? Are we the same when it comes to spending time with God? I have certain shows that I watch faithfully and when they come on, I shut everything down to focus on that. If my son wants something from the kitchen, I try to stall long enough to wait for a commercial to come on. I will wait till the end of the show to go to the bathroom. I have a DO NOT DISTURB mentality.

But how are we when it comes to spending time with God. We will let any and everything get in our way from us spending that much needed time with God. I was talking with another sister of mine and I would use the excuse that my son always wanted my attention so I could never have personal time with God. He would stay in his room long enough but as soon as I wanted to study or just meditate, he would come downstairs and want to jump on me or want me to come back upstairs and watch Barney with him. I would say I will wait till he goes down for a nap. But either he wouldn’t take a nap or I would begin to do something else when he did take his nap. So she told me: incorporate him in your devotional time with God. When you pray, let him be with you and see and learn from you. When you have praise and worship, let him sing and dance with you. It will teach him that this is something that he must have in his life too.

Yes, spending personal quality time with God is important. But spending time with God is more important. When it comes to spending time with God we have to have that same do not disturb attitude. We can not let the cares of the world disturb us from spending time with God. We can not let distractions disturb us from our time with God. When a hotel guest places the Do Not Disturb tag on their room, that is a sign to everyone, Leave Me Alone! We can’t get caught up in the text messages that come as soon as we get on our knees. We have to ignore the phone calls that seem to come only when we open our bible to study.

I want to encourage you to get the mindset to not let anything or anything disturb you when it comes to your time with God. If you have children, especially small children, let them join in on the praise: have them sing and dance with you. Read them the scripture in story form; show them what a true prayer warrior is. Let it be known, this is my/our time with God and we aren’t going to let anything get in our way of spending time with Him.

Be Blessed

The Candle That Burns February 19, 2010

Matthew 5:16
In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

Last night I was burning some candles, two to be exact. One was a candle in a jar and the other was a free standing candle. As I watched the candles burn, I noticed the candle in the jar wasn’t as bright as the free standing candle. The jarred candle was a pretty green scented candle and the free standing one was a pink unscented candle. I looked back and forth between both candles. As I looked at them, it was very hard for me to tell whether the jarred candle was lit. Often times it looked as if the flame had gone out. Then I said to God: Lord, I never want to be the jarred candle. I never want anyone to question whether I am on fire for you or not. I never want there to be any doubt about the passion that I have for you.

As the scripture says, “…let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Sure you may have a jarred candle moment, but whatever you have to do to keep fire going, do it. Many candle collectors/faithful burners tell you that you should always trim the wick after each use. If you don’t trim the wick, especially in a jar, a black ring, soot, builds up around the jar and leaves the jar dirty and stained. We can apply that to the spiritual as well. If we don’t allow God to trim the sin from our lives, we become dirty and stained. So how do we allow God to trim our “wick”. Constant prayer and repentance; devotion and meditation of His Word; worship and praise. But the most important thing is to stay in His presence and never think that your wick doesn’t need trimming.

Continue to let your light shine so that God will get the glory from your life.

Be Blessed!
